Christian Self Help
We all know there really is no "Self Help" method for a true Christian...
The term "self help" really assumes that we think we can actually "do it" on our own. As a Christian, I know I can't do anything of any real value on my own, without the help of a powerful Creator who loves me unconditionally.
What I can do is to make some choices in my life to create change and to promote goodness which adds to the positive things in other peoples' lives. Now, that I can do! As I choose to change, I become a better person on the inside. It is through the power of our Loving God that I can take the next step.
Also, "self help" is a term that has the potential to isolate people from the one truth that we seem to avoid in the western culture these days; RELATIONSHIP IS IMPORTANT!
Self help processes usually cause the person doing the action to step aside, or to remove themselves away from other people in order to "get away and think." There is one potential danger in that this person will find some comfort in the place of isolation, and as they are beginning to understand the "solution" to their current problem, they may desire to remain in the state of isolation as a way to escape from the problem.
People run the risk of disengaging from their relationships as a result of seeking Self-Help solutions.
As a Christian Self-Help author, I have seen the need for these types of materials to be in the hands of a group of like-minded individuals who are on the same walk of discovery rather than in the hands of an isolated individual. Self help groups can build upon similar experiences, and through meaningful relationships, strengthen the individual experience throughout the discovery process.
Just remember that you can't do it on your own. Keep your friends close, and count on them to offer what they will. You can only receive what they have to offer and give to them whatever thoughts you can. Christian Self Help Resources are designed to provide you with tools to help yourself, not to isolate yourself from the pain you are experiencing.
So, Christian Self Help could be defined as a group of like minded individuals coming together to lift up and support one another as they walk through the same or similar issues. The Christian body is the self that is needing the help, and when one member comes alongside to support another, the body is strengthened.
